Teachers Tours to Africa

Page 1/2

The teacher accompanying students on an African educational tour should research and give input on the itinerary that he will guide students on. While his/her decisions must be sanctioned by the school, it is upon him to ensure that he/she fully understands all the ins and outs of the students tour.

Some schools, colleges or universities have run a particular tour(s) repeatedly over a several yaers, and based on the continuous feedback from other faculty members, there might be very little logistics research needed for the tour to run.

But this does not diminish the teacher’s responsibility to the general and educational welfare of the students he will be in charge of.

What if it is a new tour for your school or it is the first time for you to accompany students on a school tour to Africa?

Remember, you will still be on duty during the school tour and you owe your students, their parents, the good name of your school and your end-of-year appraisal report to deliver an African educational safari that has meaning, is fun, smooth flowing and that may in one small way trigger a career choice in your students.

6 Tips for faculty members or directors planning school tours and safaris to Africa:

1. You should have an open rapport with the school's tours agency (in your home country) that is organizing the students safari to Africa. Don’t just settle for the day-to-day itinerary, raise any logistical issues you are uncomfortable with. You must feel confident and have a virtual tour before you agree to accompany the students. Get a habit of communicating with the school agency in writing - even when you have called, Skyped or texted, follow this up with a formal email, as you just never know when you might need it as a ref.

2. The school tours agency should give you the name and contact of the ground agent who will handle your students safari when in Africa. While at this, no harm in doing background search on the ground agents bio – you just never know what a “Google” might yield.
