should I carry my birdwatching telescope to Africa

by Ralf
(Berne)

I'm in a fix: how safe is it to carry my bird watching telescope to Africa. I wanted to take it as hand luggage but with my camera(s), laptop and binoculars I am already way over the weight allowed. So should I check in my birding telescope or leave it. How will this affect my bird watching holiday.

Birding Scope for African Birdwatching Tour
by: Anonymous

Wouldn't be nice if we were allowed to carry all our "fragiles' as hand luggage without a restriction of weights. But then who would judge what is fragile and what is not! Whatever, a bird watching scopes must surely rank among the fragile both in design and also in cost.

You must make choices of which birding optic to take to your African bird watching holiday. The binoculars and camera are definite in. What you may have to trade - for the birding scope is your laptop , which must be taking close to 1/2 of your allowable hand luggage weight.

For what use do you really need the laptop on the bird watching tour? This is a personal preference but the bird watching scope will enhance your birding "viewing -ship" much more than images on the laptop will. Not forgetting that will still have the chance to transfer all your African bird pictures into your laptop and social networking sites after the birding tour.

I would say, take the birding scope as hand luggage but not checked-in , as this might be just the flight your luggage will be lost or the suitcase contents damaged. Happy birding.
