Overseas adventure travel: should we include Kenya?

by Pete
(Spain)

We are putting down an itinerary for a 3 months overseas adventure travel. We are not sure if we should include Kenya as we have been told the costs of park fees are high + there is a lot of red tape in entering with a foreign registered vehicle. If we visit Tanzania do you think we will loose much by skipping Kenya.

Driving Safari in Kenya

Hello Pete,

What luck 3 months of overseas adventure travel! But you must get your logistics in place , way before you set off for your Africa adventure travel.

First see to it that your vehicle is mechanically sound and someone in your group can easily handle breakdowns. On vehicle licenses make sure you have you Carnet de Passage en Douane'( if you like, the international passport for vehicles!!)- this will make crossing the borders straight forward and easy.

Now to include Kenya or not. If you will be coming from South to north i.e from Tanzania going to Ethiopia ( or reverse) , Kenya seems a convenient cross through. Once you have your CPD , the red tape is basically over.

On park fees , they are no more than for example in Tanzania and you can choose to visit the parks that are different from those in Tanzania. For example you can stay in Aberdares/ Mt.Kenya area away from mass tourism circuit and take some days off seeing wildlife , on walking safari and enjoying the rural Kenya. Good luck.
