Kenya Walking Holidays Review

Review of our Kenyan Walking Holidays Feb 18th – March 2nd 2010

We have been saving up and waiting to visit Kenya for many years. We chose this Walking safari because it seemed to offer the experiences of Kenya without too many traveling miles between sites and a chance to walk in some safe areas with the animals.

We were not disappointed; the walking holiday lived up to everything we had hoped for.

Peter Huysman and his wife Anne planned the trip very carefully. They have worked very hard for us and would be very experienced at tailoring a safari to your needs.

We had time to relax and enjoy the drives and walks. The vehicles were not crowded; we all had excellent viewing positions. The two main drivers Joshua and Elijah were so knowledgeable and they clearly enjoyed passing on their knowledge to us. Their enthusiasm for their country and their job showed. They really made the trip for us. They were careful with the driving, often under really difficult conditions and muddy terrain. They were cautious and safe and we felt comfortable in their care.

All the camps chosen for the Kenya walking holiday were excellent, in delightful settings, and we never wanted leave them.

The opportunity to visit the school near Navaisha was a truly humbling experience and we were delighted at the links Peter is making with the staff there.

Before we set off from Nairobi we had pondered the problem of obtaining clean drinking water. Peter had that all under control; bottled water was always available to us. The lodges themselves always had bottled water in the rooms and this was a big help. It isn’t always the case on foreign trips. The arrangement was much appreciated.

The walking safari itinerary was not too exhausting. There were not many long distances and we welcomed that. The chance to walk and enjoy the weather was wonderful and to be in amongst the animals and birds. Our safety was always paramount and our drivers were alert and ready whenever necessary to whisk us up if distant buffaloes appeared curious during a walk.

I was disappointed with Tree Tops, mainly because it was so crowded, after the quiet sites we had been in. Perhaps had we seen lots of animals, our impression might have been different. We realize it is a well-known and popular tourist spot but the one night there was sufficient.

All our guides were very good and spoke good English and it was an enjoyable visit to the Masai manyatta, where we were welcomed. It was obvious that Peter has a very good rapport with the villagers and this was delightful for us all.

During the trip Peter and Anne did have several health problems to deal with and they took these in their stride, even to the unusual need to use the Flying Doctor service. Better safe than sorry.

We have many wonderful photos to enjoy, now we are back in England and although we have been home some time, I am still feeling for the edges of the mosquito net as I get up in the morning! The lack of insects was a nice surprise to us; maybe we were staying at a good time of the year? We never had any problems.

We hope that this review may help others to consider planning a similar walking safari with Peter and Anne.
