There are a lot myths about Africa safaris which are perpetuated by travelers or by assumed "experts" on Africa travel. The bit of giraffes not ever laying down is classified with that of the hyenas never hunting but always scavenging - which we know is not true.

Giraffes which are common sighting in acacia trees or wandering in open savannah , do lay down and thankfully without fatal consequences.

For visitors to Africa national parks, who do game drives on the well-trodden tourists circuit , chances of seeing giraffes laying down are slim as they ( the giraffes) , tend to lay down in areas where there is least disturbance s from vehicles. Stepping off the high tourist areas is your best bet for seeing wild animals in their natural and secure habitats and where they are likely to take postures that are otherwise classified in the African safari myths.
