How to identify birds found on Kenya birdwatching tours

Raptors, Francolins, Guineafowls & Spurfowls (Page 8/10)

The rules of how to identify birds are universal and they are applicable in whichever corner of the world you are birding in. Good and accurate wild bird identification is a culture as well as a field science that one has to learn and it is a skill that a birder get maximum value from a bird watching holiday.

To make it easier and enjoyable, especially for beginner bird watchers, it is important that one treats identification as a qualitative exercise that, if properly learnt, is transferable from one birds species to another and also from locale to another.

Therefore concentrate a lot in taking in the features such as color, posture and habitat of the birds rather than just recording the bird as "seen". While bird watching binoculars or scopes help to bring out the features of birds they are not a substitute for keen observation.

Similarly for a beginner bird watcher, in some circumstances being alone in the field or with same-level birders, with a proper field guide, may be hardier in helping you know how to identify birds than if you are with a veteran birder who is not developing your identification skill but quickly mentioning the bird’s name, ticking it off the list and let’s move!

However, a good leader can be of immense help if he guides a beginner to learn proper field skills for wild bird identification.

Online birds pictures can reinforce the field identification especially for birds species that are not found in your area. In this website there are many pictures of common birds found in Kenya and one should expect to see most of these on bird watching holidays.

All pictures are by Peter Huysman, an avid bird watcher and also the owner & operator of Ontdek Kenya - the leading outfitter of bird watching holidays in Kenya since '96.
