How well in advance should we pay a deposit for safari to africa

We are planning an African safari to Kenya. A tented safari camp insists that we pay a 50% deposit in advance on the basis that it will be during the wildebeest migration in Masai Mara.Considering that the safari deposit is non-refundable and also we might change our mind as we have 1 year to go before our safari, should we commit with a deposit.

The wildebeest migration period is one of the busiest times in Masai Mara and often tented camps and lodges are fully months in advance.

While planning in advance is essential you have to be careful not to commit with a deposit before you have counter checked that the choice you are making on the safari itinerary and also the tented camps is the right one.

50% deposit looks to be on the very high side for non-refundable safari deposit but this could be because you are are booking direct with the safari camp.

You might consider asking the safari camp if you can book through an agency in your country and with his goodwill there is a chance that you may make a temporary reservation without a deposit or at least not an immediate non-refundable deposit.

A safety net in migration safari bookings is to book into safari camps that have a chain of properties. This will allow you to change your itinerary but still remaining in the same properties and without having the cancellation policies enforced.

To wrap up, most safari camps are flexible with their books - be candid with your preferred camp and they ill possibly accommodate your wishes.
