how to prevent malaria on safari in kenya

by Ian Preston

I had very bad side effects from malaria prevention pills that I took for my safari in Kenya in '08. I want go back for another safari but I dread the malaria pills. I've heard there are local remedies that Kenyans use for malaria prevention and they have no side effects. How can I get them?

Health in Kenya
by: Kariuki Dan

It is true that Kenya people have a lot of medicinal concoctions for various diseases but the efficacy of the treatment is at times open to question. Consider the risks of taking local malaria prevention remedies for your safari in Kenya. Why not work on minimizing exposure to mosquitoes by wearing appropriate safari clothing e.g long sleeved trousers and shirts in the evening and also applying insect repellent while outdoors.

Ensuring that your hotel room or safari camp has mosquito nets is another important malaria prevention measure.

But when all is said and done , a word with your doctor on the best medication for malaria will mean that you have peace of mind on and after your safari in Kenya.

Local remedies for malaria prevention?
by: Anne Huysman , Ontdek Kenya

Hello ,

First congratulations that you are planning your 2nd safari to Kenya but even with this matters of your health are as important as they were on your 1st safari to Kenya.

Malaria is prevalent in Kenya and take this from someone ( a local) who have had her fair share of malaria bouts ..it is not fun. Thankfully advances in malaria preventions and treatment have made it much more easier for visitors to Kenya and local residents to keep themselves relatively safe from malaria and when even with the best prevention one get a bout , treatment is more readily available in government and private hospitals.

Outright I'm not a medic and on the "if you should use local remedies for malaria prevention" , I would say have a word with your doctor to first establish why you got side effects and what alternative malaria prevention pills he can give you.

Though the Kenyan people have many medicinal plants that they use for various diseases, this is an an area one should trend with caution and with enough knowledge on risks ( if any) that one exposing himself to.
