how fit shoudl I be for a walking vacation in africa?

by Connie

I am not an athlete but I want to book a walking vacation to Africa as opposed to a vehicle safari. What level of fitness should I have to do the walks?

fitness level for Africa walking safaris.
by: Anne Huysman , Ontdek Kenya

The level of fitness needed on an African walking safari is largely determined by if you will be taking a private walking safari or a group tour . On a private safari why you have your own guide - you set the pace of the walks and you have the flexibility of choosing the leg nth of the walks. Therefore the issue of fitness is then seen as how comfortable you are at the pace you are setting.

However in a group walking safari , as much the there may some limited flexibility on the pace , you need to keep up with the other walkers.

Even if there are several safari guides to allow the group to separate to accommodate different paces , you may not get the option of treating a group tour like a personal tour - so you should have a moderate level of fitness and an acceptable interest in the outdoors.

The best is that the majority there is so much to see on a well planned African walking safari, from birds, plants , wildlife and great scenery that the objective of the safaris is not to log in the kilometers but to enjoy the outdoors.

Be candid with your walking safari operator about your fitness level and get to know about the terrain, the number of hours that each walk take and if there are options for shorter walking safaris. Also getting the profile of the clients who will be joining the tour will help you to know if you will click with the group on the fitness front.
