Gluten free food for celiac travelling to Africa

by Joan
(Brazil)

I’m a celiac with high level gluten intolerance – this keeps me afraid of going on an Africa safari. Should I bring my own foods or are there available alternative crabs food for celiac.

Health Food Stores in Kenya
by: Anonymous

There are health food stores located in at least 4 major shopping centers in Nairobi. All of these stores stock Gluten free products including, breakfast cereal, pasta, Gluten free flour, and imported packaged gluten free bread. (nothing like standard bakery style but an option nevertheless). The range is slightly limited, but available to take with you on your on self catering safari. You will probably find though that if the tour operator is advised, most of the Kenya safari camps can provide you with Gluten free meals. Reconfirm with the Camp Director just to make sure the issue is firmly understood.

African safaris for celiacs
by: Anne Huysman , Ontdek Kenya

Getting enough gluten-free carbohydrates should be a major any celiacs traveling to Africa. A lot of care needs to be put in planning the tour and questions relating to availability or otherwise of gluten-free carbohydrates should be done before any deposit or payment of whatever kind ref the safari is done.

Travel and diet for celiacs has to be handled on a case by case basis depending on the level of gluten intolerance but there is a whole range of carbohydrates alternatives that are healthy and wholesome. With choices of potatoes, rice, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, arrow roots or cassava which can be prepared as steamed, boiled, roasted or fried. Another good alternative ( all depending on individual) is maize product , a very common feature in east Africa that is cooked into Ugali.

A celiac also needs fruits and vegetables and travel to Africa gives you an opportunity to sample a wide variety of local fruits such as bananas, papayas, pineapples, mangoes, passion fruits among others. For vegetables your have protein rich legumes and leafy greens.

Other sources of proteins are , eggs, white to red meat and dairy products.
